What Can I Do With a Degree in English?

This common question asked by students has more answers than you might think. Students who major in English have a range of careers available to them including teacher, writer, editor, or even journalist. Strong command of the written word, knowledge of grammar, and a significant exposure to literature can lead an English major to a successful and rewarding career in various industries. Publishing, broadcasting, education, web developing, government, and non-profit are just a few of career options that English majors choose.

While Columbus State does not offer a major in English, courses taken within the department fulfill the requirement for an Associate’s Degree. Our Arts and Sciences Division allows students to complete coursework for the first two years of a Bachelor's Degree at an affordable price. Students then transfer the earned credits to a four-year college or university to finish the undergraduate degree.

Where Can I Find More Information?

The Occupational Outlook Handbook http://www.bls.gov/oco/ provides more information related to careers such as the work environment, salary, job growth, and education needed for various fields of study. This handbook is maintained by the Bureau of Labor Statistics within the
U.S. Department of Labor and is a great resource.
